Family Space Camp Is an Out-of-this-World Experience. Some things need to be experienced firsthand because words will not do it justice. Family Space Camp® at the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville is one of those experiences.
Here’s my take. The US Space and Rocket Center is an inspirational place for families who enjoy sharing authentic experiences. To enjoy time at the facility it is not essential to be a math whiz or a science geek. The place is simply impressive. The facility is loaded with positively compelling interactive experiences. The atmosphere not intimidating hence any age will find enjoyment. Meaning grandparents need not avoid participating. Our family spent a day and wished we could have spent a week.
The Rocket Center is a giant learning capsule well-suited to both right brain learning and left brain learning. So your right-brained child who is creative, social, and very visual skills will be excited. And your left-brained child who is masterful at sequencing, language, and math will be just as happy. The atmosphere at the Rocket Center encourages independent, divergent thinking which enables kids to look at things differently and allows them to ask loads of questions and get answers on the spot. Actually I think the atmosphere which focuses on “real science” is just as interesting and inspiring for adults. The facility is not gender excluding or age sensitive.
The Rocket Center offers a variety of super cool programs for families focusing on the science of the future and melding the ideas with the present. The monthly hands-on activities emphasize the development of ideas relating to “STEAM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).
Training the Mars Generation. But the point of my mentioning the US Space and Rocket Center is that in addition to all of the cool day adventures available, they also offer Family Space Camp®. The parents I have spoken with all agree, the experience is cooler than ice cubes. I have a four-year-old grandson and our family is already is already counting the days until we can participate - only three years and 17 days.
The three- and four-day camps feature simulated mission training, operational activities, rocket construction, and on-site space history lessons amid one of the world’s largest spacecraft collections. All attendees have the opportunity to experience astronaut training simulators including the 1/6th gravity chair and the manned maneuvering unit. Bonus Points: The Center also conducts Aviation Challenge Family Camp an immersive experience based on jet fighter pilot training and includes land and water survival training.
